March UA MR to Asia

January 7th, 2009 by rose
  • OK.....I've been a mileage whore for years, but only recently have learned to play the game better. Luckily, my MRs have all been short, since I usually only needed a few miles (or segments) to put me over the top.

March is triples miles bonus for UA. I already have a trip scheduled to Europe at the end of March. This is a legit trip to visit family.

I'm looking for a MR earlier in the month. Since I'm already flying to Europe, I'd prefer to head to Asia or SAmerica. Leave on a Friday, home on Sunday (or leave Sat and home on Monday), either weekend of March 3-6 or 10-13.

Leaving from Sacramento (SMF). (And, of course, looking for a fare that's upgradeable with SWU.....I can't imagine 30 hours straight in Economy, even if E+.

Anyone out there have any great suggestions? I've looked around, and not finding much of anything. (Maybe I'm not doing something right? )

In advance, many thanks. Maybe one day  I can grow up and be as creative as you guys. But, I've learned many things from FT since I have been active here, and hopefully I'll learn from this, too! ^

  • I believe Ameniti members only get double miles if you subscribed under the monthly plan, am I correct? Those members didn't get 25,000 miles for signing up but can accumulate up to 25,000 miles using that double miles promo.

  • I've called UA MP twice on this. It is 3times miles + 1k bonus= 4 times miles. AS far as the Amenity bonus program I haven't a clue.. To the OP "miles whore" that isn't word for what I have booked in March. If I don't drop dead first or during the month for lack of sleep get sick.I loved that K class EWR-HKG(17885) fare for $573, no required 6 days, but alas not upgradeable on the intl. sector.Nothing is easy, Unfortunetly fare is GONE

  • here are some of my favorites i'm considering. requires some creative nesting.

eze-zrh RT 1040+ W class - can stopover in the US both directions in most N.E. cities (london 975+ and other european cities also)

bkk-eze RT 2383+ B class - great for EQM and upgrades. also can stopover almost anywhere in the US both ways

cmb-lax --- well know :) but staying on UA means 2 extra days in BKK/SIN because of flight timings which makes it not doable for me... bonus is that with SWU = F class for about 1.5 cpm (eek!) ... little reading required for this one

check out the 'few of my favorite things' thread ... don't know how to link to it for some great FLL ideas... albeit with lots of TED segments

I'm holding out for the 'traditional' feb double booking bonus. any thoughts as to whether we will have this this year???

  • i believe it's also five times the miles for people booking through silverwingsplus, who are united premier exec and above.

but the silverwingsplus fares means flying coach

  • - 4800 (2400 x 2) base miles
    - 4800 1P bonus miles
    - 4800 triple miles in March bonus

the 3x component should be 9600 (or 19200 total)

  • Sorry to ask you an off-topic question, but where did you find the March triple miles on UA deal? Could I possibly get this posted here?

  • You can get to MNL for less than $700 RT, the UA routing will take you thru HKG. Search here: http://dps1.travelocity.com/lognlogin.ctl?tr_module=FARE&Service=TRAVELOCITY

I found ORD-HKG-MNL seats all throughout the month.
That airfare disappeared briefly on Sunday. I was able to do a ghost booking on Travelocity for $690 all-in. After it reappeared, it now books at $719 all-in.
Why am I only able to book this fare through Travelocity? UA.bomb won't let me book it as it says no flight available. I even tried using the multi-city function. I guess if I do book it, I can give Travelocity my $5 considering I'm always using fuctions on their site, yet I never book through them.

  • Up to 25,000 miles, it can be any fare. Over 25,000 miles, it has to be H and above. MR for H fare (or above) just doesn't make sense to me though.

  • Although it's not quite as many miles......I found an alternative for a lot less.

$290 SMF-SFO-JFK-SFO-SMF all in one day, only 1 hr 20 on the ground at JFK, and it's PS service trans-con.

    I'll do that two consecutive weekends......and it's about 12,000 miles. ^ Plus bonuses! ^ ^ ^

  • The triple miles includes the actual miles. It will only be five times the actual miles in your situation.

Can you talk me (a 1P, non-Ameniti member, who will elect the triple miles in March bonus) through this were I, for example to fly IAD-SFO RT (just over 2400 miles each way)? Would that be:

    - 4800 (2400 x 2) base miles
    - 4800 1P bonus miles
    - 4800 triple miles in March bonus

Then if I were to join Ameniti, I could goose that up by another 9600 (4800 x 2)? (Is it still possible to join Ameniti and get that double miles offer? Must the tickets be bought through Ameniti? Is Silver Wings of any use in this?)

I assume that their is no multiplication of other miles, like 1K for united.com booking or miles with credit card purchase of UA travel.

If it is really possible to get 5x miles out of this in March, then a lot of things will become very attractive in the month that proverbially comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.

  • ........but it gets even better. I actually will be six times the actual miles.
    1. Actual miles
    2. 1K Bonus miles
3, 4, and 5. Triple miles for Your choice promo
    6. the Amenity double miles promo..

The triple miles includes the actual miles. It will only be five times the actual miles in your situation.

  • Thanks Pat. While I would have liked the additional miles for BOS (yeah, we also found the S fare for $272), I was willing to pay a few bucks more. We get to fly P.S. service in both directions, and no red-eye. We leave home at 7 am, back at 10:30 that night.

    Happy holidays all!

  • Argh, this only works for fols with elite status on UA.......................... :(

  • There's been some debate about this, but I think the consensus is that triple miles means that bonus miles are double the base miles, so with 1K and Ameniti bonus it would come out to 5X miles. Still not bad at all.

What you have in mind may turn out to be a pipe dream if you insist on being able to upgrade, fly over the weekend and have an almost immediate turnaround. It's still possible that some exceptionally cheap upgradeable fares with no minimum stay and day restrictions will show up, but that's hard to predict.

An alternative to flying to Asia/South-America is to do several transcons. Transcons usually have a better cost per mile ratio and are easier to upgrade. Two transcons could easily give you more than the 12000 BIS miles you were looking into for about $400.

  • The cheapest flights to Asia usually require a 6 day min stay......It would help if you tell us how many cents per RDM/EQM are you willing to spend.
correct and that is why I am not making the SIN Do this Jan, just can't get anything under $1300 ORD-SIN w/o the 6 day stay.

With the triple miles in March and elite UA bonus of 100%, the cost per mile accrued comes out to just over $.01 a rate that I'm very pleased with.

  • 6. the Amenity double miles promo

I'm embarassed to not know about this one... Anyone have a link?
    Thanks.

  • If you have enough time, you could combine a cheapie 6-day min stay fare to say BKK with a round trip (*A not UA) to NZ and attend Kiwi Fest 3-5 March (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=440106).

  • i believe it's also five times the miles for people booking through silverwingsplus, who are united premier exec and above.

    http://www.silverwingsplus.com/swp/browse/doubleMiles.swp?

Looks like the mileage perk is capped at 12.5K per annum, IIUC.

Also, it means booking through the Silver Wings Travel Center....as well as paying the 264.00 per year membership fee, if over 55. Granted, one does get a 25.00 TC every month...

    Pat

  • Sorry to ask you an off-topic question, but where did you find the March triple miles on UA deal? Could I possibly get this posted here?

    Someone already answered your question.......

......but it gets even better. I actually will be six times the actual miles.
    1. Actual miles
    2. 1K Bonus miles
3, 4, and 5. Triple miles for Your choice promo
    6. the Amenity double miles promo

I'm figuring that Europe or the closer-Asian cities will yield about 12,000 miles roundtrip. If, by some magic, I could find prices in the $600 or $700 range, I'd be happy. For more miles, maybe $100 or so more. Is this a pipe dream?

I know someone on the East Coast who has amileage run planned in March. LGA-ORD-HKG.....only 2 hours on the ground .... HKG-ORD-LGA. Home in less than 36 hours. Actual miles over 17,000. Times 6 is 102,000 miles. And he bought an internet special for about $475. Not upgradable......but WOW!

  •
pardon my ignorance, but do ameniti members get double miles? I thought it was just for hotel/car rental/cruises, not air travel. or was it a specific ameniti deal? I did the $145 ameniti deal for 25k UA miles, but if I get double miles for traveling too, then ^^^

  • Someone already answered your question.......

Was this the link in number 5? That doesn't work anymore. If not answer in number 5: How to get the tripple miles?

  • I'm no big fan of silverwingsplus (the restrictions pretty much make the benefits unusable) but for the record they do offer a $24 a month membership.

again to get the double miles benefit it offers, at least to use it's special fares, you have to fly coach. I'm not sure whether the double miles benefits are only available on its special fares, however

  • What moondog said.

The Ameniti offer would have given you another 4800 for a total of 24000 (4800x5=24000). However, the sign up period has ended for that offer.

  • Although it's not quite as many miles......I found an alternative for a lot less.

OTOH, you could do MOD-SFO-LAX-BOS-SFO-MOD for 272 on a S fare; about 6800 EQM's IIRC; out and back in about 22hrs via red-eye; free parking for 10 days at MOD. I had also found you a SMF-ZRH V fare but you were already going to Europe once during that period.

    Have a nice trip!

    Pat

It was a promo....but someone at SFO told me on Sat that it was still going on. I'm not sure.

It was a monthly program, $19 a month. Double miles. I did not get the 25K or 50K bonus miles.....but double miles are worth more to me.

  • The cheapest flights to Asia usually require a 6 day min stay, and upgradeable fares to South America are relatively expensive. It's not that you're doing anything wrong, you need flexibility if you want to get the best deals. It would help if you tell us how many cents per RDM/EQM are you willing to spend.
