'New' AN763s

January 7th, 2009 by rose
  • The first of 4 Ansett Boeing 767-300s has landed in HNL (VH-BZL?), enroute to CHC (AKL?) and then onto Australia.

    Does anyone know what the seating configuration will be on these aircraft, and whether they will be fitted out with AN seats, etc. How long is the lease?

    Cheers,

    Justin

  • I understand now that you are not Mr Rich, just a battler like the rest of us.

    I can see where you could rack up heaps of points that way.

    Co-incidently I used to own a couple of cabs in Perth back in the eighties (made a fortune) but SHMBO made me give up driving when there was a rash of attacks.

    After a few years as on owner(only),I sold up as it was a hassle dealing with dick-head irresponsible drivers, repair bills, maintenance etc, I invested the money in real-estate and havn't looked back.

    I still say you're a LEGEND

    SHMBO = She Who Must Be Obeyed.

  • Hmmn,

    Ansett the imitator? I'll just mention a few of its firsts.

    Ansett's Australian Firsts:

    * E-checkin
    * E-ticket
    * Inflight Chef
    * Frequent Flyer Program
    * Club Lounges
    * Domestic Inflight Video
    * PTVs
    * Premium Economy Cabin

    Now, care to list Qantas' innovations?

    From what I've heard -BZL is smelling like a brand new car inside, and all J seats are have the full footrests. There are also 8 toilets on board, 2 more than average on the 763 apparently.

    Cheers,

    Justin

  • Justin,

    I read it on airliners.net

    I don't know what that means, probably very little...

    I tried doing a search, but since my modem is very slow, I couldn't find the exact post.

    But yes, it seems logical given, as you say, AN kind of lacks capacity right now.

    They could start by taking out some toilets, not all of them of course but, I mean, who goes to the toilet on a SYD-MEL flight anyway except in an emergency anyway?...(I did go once betw SYD and ADL - but that was because I wanted to try out the business class toilet http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif ). Toilets mean room for seats.

    I assume that the AN 763's have the main exit doors fore and aft and the two overwing exit doors a la QF B767-338ER, rather than the 4 doors on QF B767-336ER. That economises space.

    Am I right in saying that AN B762's have 216? Which is rather packed, even for domestic (CO 762's have 25J/149Y - 174!)

    Regards,

    Clement

  • Good! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

    Any word on what the J Class seats are like?

    Regards,

    Clement

    I heard it was going to depend on status - Bronze will get paper, Silver, Gold and Platinum will get plastic. Dunno whether or not I will get one, I have this nice blue Qantas Club card...

    Since QF swipe the card at check-in if that is the identification you present for e-tickets, I would have thought they would keep plastic cards, as it makes check-in that much quicker.

    That is what I would have thought - but then, I ditched my QF FF card as soon as I joined QF Club (2 months later) so I don't actually have a QF FF card. And as at todays mail (Monday 20/8) still have nothing from them.

  • SWMBO not SHMBO

  • You seemed to have missed the biggest loophole in the GR Visa .... the fact that you get up to 55 days interest free. So there is no need to deposit the cash in the account the next morning , nor the morning after that - just so long as you pay by the date on your bill that comes once a month, you pay a grand total of $0 interest.

    Maybe you should stick to trying to rip off the less pissed on QF Scheme... because any idiot can pay for things with their credit card, but it takes a special idiot to pay it off right away when he has up to 55 days to pay it!

    Depends how long you have spent in the Golden WIng lounge prior to departure - I remember once I made five trips to the toilet between SYD and MEL after spending three hours in the Qantas Club lounge, and consuming around 15 Crown Lagers.

  • Thats a pretty good thing Dave, well thought ! I have to earn my FF miles the "normal" way, ie, flying, spending on visa and staying at hotels.

  • I've heard from other boards, that the new AN 763's will be fitted out with domestic configuration only. I suppose this means 6 abreast business and the normal 7 economy. Apart from that, I can't give you any more info. They might be configured in the same way as some of QF's domestic 763's, ie, 30J/210Y - 240.

    Cheers,

    Clement

  • Actually QF did a good thing and we bronzes even got placcy cards (ie: real ones) rather than paper. A definite step up from the crap that AN is giving out (I had a friend show me her AN card, and it was a joke).

  • I've just heard from AN, that VH-BZL has a capacity of 236.

    206Y and 30J.

    Aircraft had a lot of 'interesting' work done on it in CHC/MEL.

    Cheers,

    Justin

  • Hey thank you QamtasAllTheWay - immitation is the highest form of flattery http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

    Back to the 763's, I'm booked on 2 on 17/9 and 27/9 MEL-SYD v.v. so I'll let you all know what the J seats are like (who knows, I may pull my digital cam out for you guys!). I am sure though someone from here will be on one of these babies before that time, but if not I definately will be.

  • You're my inspitration Richard, didn't you know that ? You give me the raw ideas and i make then into something worthwhile.

    BTW, what do the new QFF cards look like ? I'm still o/s so its probably in my mailbox. I'm sure they're better than AN's semi-paper cards...

  • Dave,

    Even though it would be a courtesy to send you the new bronze card, i doubt they'd do it since it has no OW benefits and your QC card already has the number.

    Good luck in attaining tier !

    p.s. = we should really be having this convo on the QF forum...

  • Can we get back to the topic and bash QantasAllTheWay in a new thread? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

    btw Mr.Qantas(I bet you designed the evil red swirl on the new card!), the comment was in relation to your newly resigned signature "A member of Oneworld," which in this case is *definately* immitation of someone else's signature http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

  • thadocta,

    I'm impressed that you have earned 475,000 ANGW points using your Westpac Visa Card.

    How long has it taken you to spend $475,000, I think you must be very rich, you're a LEGEND.

    We only spend about $30,000 on Westpac Visa, ANZ Visa and Diners Club per year, and I thought we were extravagant.

    Well Done.

  • Well TAA did have the first domestic Business Class http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

  • Clement,

    Thanks for that, could you direct me to some of these other boards?

    I wouldn't be surprised if they were configured in a 230-240pax config, I mean, the 762s are fairly fullish relative to other 762s, and well AN is sort of desperate for capacity.

    Cheers,

    Justin

  • Good luck in attaining tier !

    Won't happen - the flights I make will only get me about 300 status credits per annum, so I *may* make lifetime Silver in about 10 years.

    p.s. = we should really be having this convo on the QF forum...

    Nah, I like pissing off the AN'ers with their crappy FF program. Particularly since I have 475,000 points on Global Rewards, each and every one of them obtained through Westpac Visa. Suppose I should use them, SQ from SYD to LHR return sound good in P?

    Simple really - I own and occasionally drive a taxi in the Blue Mountains, about 90 minutes drive west of Sydney. We do lots of deliveries - an example would be the local Chinese restaurant, where I would pay for the order and deliver it, charging whatever the order cost and my delivery fee.

    I simply put all such deliveries on the card, collect the cash, and deposit the cash into the Visa card the next day.

    This also avoids interest charges, as the deposit pays off the oldest charges.

    Tonight, for example, I put about $280 on the card, all of which will be paid off tomorrow, thus earning about 280 points. I reckon I will do about 1000 points this week.

    Nah, just found a loophole in the system. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

  • They've got till 15/9 to sort it all out, so see what happens.

    Are you a tier status though ? Because if you're a tier status FF you need your new FF card with the OW equivalent. Otherwise, the QC card is enough.

  • Clement,

    Must go and read those airliners.net threads then.

    AN 762s seat 211 pax, however I suspect that there are two different configurations for the 5 original Ansett B767-277s (VH-RMD to VH-RMH)and the ex Britannia birds (VH-RMK, VH-RML, VH-RMO). When VH-RMM (B762ER) was in a special international configuration, it sat 175 pax (there were never any seat maps published).

    Taking out toilets, for some reason I doubt that will happen, because of the other routes which the aircraft need to fly.

    An A320 went US at PER today or last night, and there were a handful of very unhappy pax for AN, some terrible publicity on Channel 10. I don't know whether it's just media portrayal, but what's wrong with AN? Don't they know how to take care of pax on the ground anymore? They're brilliant in the air, but on the ground, it just seems that nowadays they're lacking.

    Cheers,

    Justin

  • Justin,

    I saw that exact same news story.

    Engine cowling problems at PER...spare parts had to be flown from MEL!

    I forgot about the possibility of AN 763's going to PER...will need them for the 4 and 1/2 hour flight http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

    I wonder, if that'd been a QF 762, would one lady on TV have said so unequivocally, "I'm not flying Ansett again." Especially if QF had treated the pax that badly.

    In two words: Media Sensationalism

    Cheers,

    Clement

    I wish I was - White in the old scheme, bronze in the new. :-(

    Dave

  • Yes Richard, AN would know about immitating wouldnt they ?

  • AN on the ground has been good to me. Not just my recent experience at BNE (where they really did go above and beyond) but other instances AN ground staff have been great. From the guys checking/helping us with e-checkin to the fabbo CSR in the checkin fo saphire who was a gem in april, to some decent folks in the GW Club, can't really complain.

    And let's not forget the GW Club person who found Rudi's palm pilot which he left there and sent back to him in switzerland!

    That is how I get my QF points! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif QF is my preferred carrier, and it is also a sponsor of the Australian Open, so that is who Tennis Australia uses to fly me to various tournaments.

    I only have the Ansett GR Visa because I used to work for Westpac.

    Dave

  • Hear hear Dave...you're a legend ! I was on a few flights like that too. Q Club is too good for these things.

    BUT - since my pay is all in cash, if I deposit it immediately, I can then use it again to pay for things like groceries, etc., rather than pay cash - thus getting extra points (again).

    The other thing to consider is that yes, I do indeed get up to 55 days interest free - but if I was to get $400 in deliveries in one night (not unheard of on a Friday or Saturday night) and I left it for 30 days to deposit the money, I would have to actually *do* something WITH that money to ensure that I had it when it came time to pay it all off. At least if I pay it off the next day, I don't have to worry about it.

    Also, paying it off immediately means I will have that bit of the credit limit available if I need it. If I was to do $400 in deliveries every Fri and Sat night for four weeks, that would use up my $A3000 credit limit. If I pay it off immediately, I will still have $A3K (or close to it) available each day.

    Dave
