Slightly OT = The Smallest Commercial Airport runway in the world?

  • I found this link the other day - has anyone been there?

  • Yes I have, just last month. I took my own photo of the strip from the mountain above. Given the rough sea crossing from St Maarten, it certainly is a viable alternative for some.

There are other interesting airport locations too such as the one in Europe (Spain I think) that has part of the runway carved into the cliff and the remainder suspended into the air with pylons.

  • London City is known as one of the shortest to have commercial JET service, another sub-group. It's 1,199 metres long , is another with water at both ends, and handles a substantial daily traffic, though only certain types are certified for it and the crews require special training. However on a recent flight into there I was surprised when we departed from Dublin taking off from the even shorter runway 29 on the north side of the airport, normally only used by Dublin's small amount of general aviation, in a 146 jet. Well, if you can do one I guess you can do the other.

I guess that would depend upon what you call "Commercial Airport", I have flown into Tine, Sudan on numerous occasions in an AN74-200 Jet aircraft. Tine is 680 meters in length. I paid for the seat, so that would make it commercial would it not? ;)

  • It might be Madeira-Funchal airport in Portugal

That's the one Speaker, I was too lazy to look it up for myself.

  • And 3 months ago the DLR was opened out to the airport as well ^
Yes- it is fantastic- you can get anywhere in London by DLR/Tube or by taxi (less than 25 quid to pretty much anywhere in SW/NC1)

  • Shortest runway for a commercial airport?

Any helipad such as the one in Vancouver harbour.
