With new HH reward levels, now which is better: 4 HH points or 1 Starpoint?

  • I've read pitflyer's thread on 25 HH points vs. 7 Starwood points - the consensus seemed to be it was a toss-up. But there haven't been any posts to that thread since the new HH award levels were announced.

    These award changes made me look at my CC strategy: currently I use the DL Amex whenever I can get at least double miles (most of my Amex charges this year have been on the DL card); all other Amex charges go on the Starwood card. My only purpose in getting DL miles is to convert them to HH (AA is my main FF account), although I keep a balance in my DL account as a backup for emergency tickets. I use HH points and Starpoints only for hotel awards.

    Since HH points have been devalued with the new award levels, I don't know if 4HH points are still better than 1 Starpoint. If I had Diamond status with HH, I think HH would still be the better choice, but I'm a lowly Gold so I still have to deal with blackout dates.

    Any advice from the braintrust would be greatly appreciated.


  • On the other other hand if you're mid-tier in either program, HH treats you better with upgrades, free breakfast etc.


  • IMO, Starpoints are more flexible because its easier to get award stays with them and also, the conversion possibilities to air miles are also there. I would definetely go with the Starpoints.
